Mitsubishi Chemical Licenses Patent for Biomass-based Polyester to Kuraray Group

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) announced today that it recently signed a licensing agreement with Kuraray Co., Ltd. and Kuraray trading Co., Ltd. for the patent of a biomass-based polyester.

The license agreement allows the Kuraray Group access to MCC’s biomass-based, high-quality polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and is expected to have a variety of industrial applications such as fiber manufacturing. The substance patent (JP4380654)—a basic patent type required for businesses engaged in material manufacturing or sales— has been registered by MCC in Japan, the US, EU, and China.

Unlike conventional, petroleum-derived products, the production of this innovative material reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The development of innovative biomass-based products has been a focus of MCC for many years, and the company owns numerous patents in the area. To foster the adoption of more sustainable materials, MCC will not only continue to expand its own business but also promote collaborative efforts and licensing arrangements with other companies toward the creation of a sustainable carbon society.
